Description:
This course will educate OPO Coordinators on the processes for responding to Donation After Cardiac Death (DCD) situations (Condition T). "Condition T" is a program aimed at obtaining donor organs from deceased emergency department patients after failed resuscitative attempts. According to the Condition T process, when efforts to revive patients fail, emergency department staff per routine contact the local organ recovery organization to determine whether the patient has a positive donor designation status. If so, family members are notified while the Condition T is activated. A team separate from the professionals that attempted to resuscitate the patient are summoned to prepare the cadaver so that it is possible to recover the abdominal organs.

This course will define Condition T and explain why it is ethical and important. In addition to teaching the procedural technique of perfusion for organ preservation, this course will address the legal and ethical issues related to:

  • donor status,
  • preservation of evidence for the Medical Examiner/Coroner,
  • documentation of times for sequence of events,
  • non-involvement of the clinical team, and
  • family visitation.

It will ensure that the OPO Coordinator is fully educated in responding to Condition T situations, the expectations for time in the ED, and equipment requirements. It will also cover the OPO Coordinator¿s communication requirements with Transplant Surgery and the Medical Examiner/Coroner.

Note:
When you register for a class you will be prompted to login. If you do not have a Condition T user account, follow the instructions on the login screen to create an account. You can then register for a class after the account creation process is complete.
